Overview of Key Rituals
Blessings for Milestones & Children's Growth
For Hatsumiyamairi and Shichigosan, we offer Kimono Rental, Kimono Dressing Services, and Commemorative Photo Opportunities within the sacred shrine grounds.
We invite you to experience these traditional celebrations with peace of mind.
Hatsumiyamairi (Infant's First Blessing)
A ritual to introduce a newborn to the deities and pray for their healthy growth. Traditionally held around 31 days for boys and 33 days for girls, we offer flexible scheduling based on Canadian weather and the health of the mother and child.
Conception & Safe Childbirth Prayers
We enshrine Konohanasakuya-hime no Mikoto, the revered deity of safe childbirth and fertility. We pray for couples wishing to be blessed with children, as well as the safety and health of expectant mothers and their unborn babies.
Academic Success & Exam Blessings
Prayers for students to maximize their potential, maintain focus during their studies, and successfully pass crucial entrance or certification exams.
Shichigosan Festival
A traditional rite of passage celebrating children reaching the ages of 3 (boys and girls), 5 (boys), and 7 (girls), expressing gratitude for their growth and praying for their bright future.
Family Safety & Well-being (Kanai Anzen)
An expression of gratitude for your current peaceful life, praying that your family remains healthy, harmonious, and full of smiles under the constant protection of the deities.
Randoseru & School Backpack Blessing
Commemorating the milestone of entering primary school or starting a new school year. Children bring their "Randoseru" (traditional Japanese schoolbags) or regular school backpacks to the altar to be purified for safety and academic success.
Protection & Purification
Traffic & Vehicle Safety
Invoking the protection of Futsunushi no Ōkami, the deity who clears paths, we purify cars, motorcycles, bicycles, or children’s ride-on toys to ensure safe travels and prevent accidents.
Recovery from Illness (Byōki Heiyu)
A ritual praying for a swift recovery from illness or injury. Guided by Kaede Sakitsuhime no Mikoto, the deity who awakens vital life force, we pacify negative influences to restore harmony to body and mind.
Yakuyoke (Unlucky Year Blessings)
A purification ritual for those entering "Yakudoshi" (years of spiritual and physical transition traditionally prone to misfortune).
We clear negative energies to ensure a positive, peaceful year ahead.
Doll Memorial Service (Ningyō Kuyō)
A farewell ritual for cherished dolls or traditional figurines (like Hina or May dolls) that have protected your children. We purify them through Shinto rites before a respectful ritual burning.
Corporate, Business, & Dōjō Blessings
Off-site Shinto Ceremony
We provide specialized corporate blessings to support the success and safety of businesses, retail shops, and martial arts academies. These can be held at the shrine or as an off-site ritual.
Jichinsai (Groundbreaking Ceremony)
An essential ritual performed before constructing or renovating homes or buildings. We appease the local deities of the land, ask permission for its use, and pray for the safety of construction workers and the longevity of the structure.
Office & Home Relocation Purification
Performed when purchasing a new office space or residence, moving into a new building, or when looking to refresh and purify the energy of a current environment.
Dōjō & Sports Facility Safety Blessings
We provide annual safety purifications for martial arts Dōjō and sports facilities at the beginning of the year, praying that students can train diligently without serious injuries or accidents. Our main deity, Futsunushi no Ōkami, is the supreme deity of martial arts, possessing profound divine virtues for protecting training halls.
New Year & Annual Business Prosperity Blessings
In addition to grand opening purifications, we hold annual New Year blessings to pray for business success, company growth, and workplace harmony for the upcoming year.
Cleanse your corporate space and mind at the start of the year to welcome new achievements.
Remote, Proxy, & Mail-in Blessings for Long-Distance Devotees
Remote Shinto Rituals
For those living across the vast expanse of Canada, in Japan, or elsewhere globally who cannot visit Canada Katori Shrine in person, we offer modern, accessible ways to receive blessings:
Proxy & Mail-in Blessings
The Chief Priest performs the formal ritual at the altar on your behalf. The purified talisman (Ofuda) and amulets (Omamori) are subsequently shipped directly to your home.
Participate in your sacred ritual in real-time via video streaming. Using platforms like Zoom, you can look upon the altar, listen to the Chief Priest chanting the sacred Shinto prayers (Norito), and perform the traditional bows and claps (Two Bows, Two Claps, One Bow) along with the priest.
This modern approach transcends geographical barriers, bringing a sense of pure spiritual connection into your home.
The "Ofuda" and "Omamori" will be shipped after the ceremony.
Remote Blessings via Zoom (Live Online Attendance)
Naming Consultation
In Japan, it has been a long-cherished tradition to seek a name for a new life before the divine, praying for the child's healthy growth and bright future.
We offer several name candidates based on your preferred sounds, the meanings of the characters, and auspicious stroke counts. We are here to help give shape to your family's wishes, so please feel free to reach out.
How we conduct the consultation:
-
Respecting your wishes: We carefully consider the sounds, Kanji characters, and specific meanings you wish to incorporate into the name.
-
Flexibility in writing: We can consult on names using Kanji as well as Hiragana.
-
Preparation time: After discussing your preferred imagery via email, we will dedicate time to selecting the most suitable names. Please allow a few days to a week for us to prepare and present your options.
Please note: All consultations are by appointment only.
